700 Students from 35 Southland High Schools to Compete in Solar Cup

WHAT:

  Live broadcast opportunities Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 15-17 as 700 students from 35 Southland schools compete in solar-powered boats, sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and local water agencies. In addition, the competition includes student-filmed 30-second water conservation videos.
 

WHEN:

8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (earlier by prearrangement), Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 15-17, 2009

 

WHERE:

Lake Skinner, 10 miles northeast of Interstate 15, Temecula, Calif.; (Riverside County Thomas Guide page 930, 4-D)
 

VISUALS:

Hundreds of high school students, many in team colors; scores of colorfully painted boats vying for “Hottest Boat” trophy; Friday qualifying events, Saturday endurance competitions, Sunday sprint racing and awards ceremony.

BACKGROUND:

Solar Cup is a seven-month program in which teams of Southland high school students build and race solar-powered boats, with hands-on lessons in engineering, physics, communication, carpentry and managing natural resources. It culminates in a three-day Solar Cup event at Lake Skinner. The program and event are sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; the teams are sponsored by Metropolitan’s public member agencies .
