Portland General Electric receives two national green power awards
Portland General Electric has once again demonstrated its leadership in advancing the renewable energy market. The company received two Green Power Leadership Awards last night at a ceremony during Renewable Energy Markets 2010 in Portland, Ore., an annual conference co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS).
DOE presented PGE with the Utility Green Power Program of the Year Award and CRS presented Thor Hinckley, PGE’s renewable power program manager, with a Green Power Pioneer Award.
“PGE is honored to receive the Department of Energy’s Utility Green Power Program of the Year Award and to have Thor Hinckley recognized with CRS’ Pioneer Award,” said Jim Piro, PGE’s president and CEO. “DOE’s Utility Green Power Program Award is a testament to our customers for their ongoing commitment to support renewable energy. Thor is being recognized as a pioneer for his devotion to growing PGE’s Renewable Power Program and helping to shape and build the renewable energy industry.”
Utility Green Power Program: The DOE’s Utility Green Power Program of the Year Award recognizes utilities that are leaders in implementing a voluntary renewable energy offering for their customers. PGE is receiving DOE’s Utility Green Power Program of the Year Award for its industry-leading Renewable Power Program serving more than 75,000 PGE residential and business customers. Additionally, PGE’s program is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory for number of renewable power customers, and has a customer participation rate of more than 10 percent.
Green Power Programs aim to provide electricity consumers with market-based choices to purchase from environmentally-preferred sources. Winning organizations were evaluated based upon the resources and technologies used, total annual renewable energy sales, number of customers served, market impact, amount of green power supplied, and overall value provided to participants.
CRS’ Pioneer Award recognizes cutting-edge outreach efforts for an individual for helping to create the green power industry. The Pioneer award acknowledges continuous achievement, vision and dedication to green power.
Thor Hinckley continues to be a driving force behind PGE’s highly successful Renewable Power Program. Thor has been a tireless advocate for renewables by helping to spread the word about the rewards and benefits of purchasing green power.
In both his private and public life, Thor seeks connection with diverse organizations and individuals in an effort to build momentum for the limitless potential of renewable energy. His hard work and dedication to the cause has most certainly contributed to the reputation of the Pacific Northwest as a national leader for building a renewable future.
“Every year, CRS is gratified to put a spotlight on the achievements of individuals who personify the Green Power marketplace,” said Arthur O’Donnell, executive director, Center for Resource Solutions. “Behind every successful organization are outstanding people, whose passion for clean energy is contagious. Thor Hinckley deserves the highest recognition for his dedication to making Portland General Electric among the most successful renewable power programs in the nation.”
PGE received Green Power Leadership Awards in 2006 and 2008. The Green Power Leadership Awards are sponsored by the U.S. DOE, the EPA and the CRS. For more information on the Green Power Leadership Awards, visit the Conference Website at www.renewableenergymarkets.com/awards.
